The PPWR (short for Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) aims to change this. <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX:32025R0040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Regulation (EU) 2025\/40<\/a> serves to harmonize packaging requirements. It came into force on February 11, 2025. From August 12, 2026, most of the requirements will be binding in all EU member states.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The objectives of the PPWR:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduce packaging waste<\/li>\n<li>Increase recycling rates<\/li>\n<li>Strengthen the circular economy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Core obligations for companies:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reusability of packaging<\/strong> (reusable quotas)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Design for recycling<\/strong>: Only recyclable packaging permitted<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recyclate content<\/strong>: Minimum quotas for recyclates mandatory<\/li>\n<li><strong>Uniform labeling<\/strong> for consumers<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data and documentation requirements<\/strong> for manufacturers, importers, and distributors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Types of packaging affected:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sales packaging<\/li>\n<li>Collective packaging<\/li>\n<li>Transport packaging<\/li>\n<li>Service packaging<\/li>\n<li>Primary production packaging<\/li>\n<li>Reusable packaging<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Substance bans<\/strong> and restrictions have also been established. For example, no carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reproductive toxins may be used, nor may any substances with known environmental or health risks.
