href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/HTML\/?uri=CELEX:32000L0053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Directive 2000\/53\/EC on end-of-life vehicles (ELV)<\/a> has formed the central European legal framework for minimizing the environmental impact of vehicles at the end of their life cycle. It harmonizes existing national regulations, creates uniform requirements for manufacturers, and sets clear targets for the reuse, recycling, and recovery of vehicles and their components.<\/p>\n<p>The ELV Directive 2000\/53\/EC requires:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Compliance with substance restrictions (Art. 4, Annex II)<\/li>\n<li>Information sharing on hazardous substances (Art. 8)<\/li>\n<li>Proof of recycling rates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 1999, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imds-professional.com\/en\/database-imds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Material Data System (IMDS)<\/a> was developed by DXC Technology (formerly EDS) on behalf of several automobile manufacturers in order to comply with the End-of-Life Vehicles Directive and to provide a secure, fast way to transmit material data. These include, in particular, heavy metals such as:<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Lead<\/li>\n<li>Mercury<\/li>\n<li>Cadmium<\/li>\n<li>Chromium (VI)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These substances may only be used in strictly defined exceptional cases and up to certain limits. The documentation of such exceptions is an essential part of IMDS.
