href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/law\/better-regulation\/have-your-say\/initiatives\/14172-Hazardous-substances-exemption-for-lead-as-an-alloying-element-in-steel-aluminium-and-copper_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new\u00a0<strong>delegated directive<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that revises the\u00a0<strong>exemptions for lead as an alloying element<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>steel, aluminium, and copper<\/strong>. The aim is to align the RoHS Directive (2011\/65\/EU) with\u00a0<strong>technological progress<\/strong>\u00a0while maintaining a high level of\u00a0<strong>environmental and health protection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>What Has Changed?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4><strong>1. Restructuring of Exemptions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The previous exemptions 6a (steel), 6b (aluminium), and 6c (copper) have been\u00a0<strong>split into more specific sub-entries<\/strong>\u00a0to better reflect their applications.<\/li>\n<li>This improves\u00a0<strong>legal clarity<\/strong>\u00a0and makes compliance\u00a0<strong>easier to verify<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4><strong>2. New Thresholds and Conditions<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Steel<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Two new exemptions: 6a-I (for machining purposes) and 6a-II (for hot-dip galvanized steel).<\/li>\n<li>The lead limit for galvanized steel remains at\u00a0<strong>0.2% by weight<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/li>\n<p> \t<\/p>\n<li><strong>Aluminium<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>New exemption 6b-III for\u00a0<strong>recycled aluminium scrap<\/strong>, with a reduced lead limit of\u00a0<strong>0.3%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<p> \t<\/p>\n<li>The exemption for\u00a0<strong>machining purposes<\/strong>\u00a0will\u00a0<strong>not be renewed<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 suitable substitutes are now available.<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<p><\/li>\n<p> \t<\/p>\n<li><strong>Copper<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Exemption 6c remains in place until June 30, 2027, as <strong>reliable alternatives are still lacking<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<p> \t<\/p>\n<li>The lead limit remains at\u00a0<strong>4%<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<p><\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4><strong>3. Expiry Dates<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New<strong> expiry dates<\/strong>\u00a0will apply to all categories of electrical and electronic equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Existing exemptions will expire\u00a0<strong>12 or 18 months after the new directive enters into force<\/strong>, unless a renewal is requested.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4><strong>4. Restrictions for Consumer Products<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Products that\u00a0<strong>could be mouthed by children<\/strong>\u00a0are only exempt if:\n<ul>\n<li>the\u00a0<strong>lead release rate is below 0.05 \u03bcg\/cm\u00b2\/h<\/strong>, and<\/li>\n<li>the\u00a0<strong>coating remains effective for at least two years<\/strong>\u00a0under normal use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/li>\n<p><\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>What Does This Mean for Businesses?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Review your supply chains<\/strong>: Are affected materials still compliant?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Update technical documentation<\/strong>: Reflect new thresholds and exemptions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Track deadlines<\/strong>: Renewal applications must be submitted\u00a0<strong>at least 18 months before expiry<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Prepare for substitution<\/strong>: Especially for aluminium used in machining.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Conclusion: Time to Act<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The updated directive brings\u00a0<strong>greater clarity<\/strong>, but also\u00a0<strong>greater responsibility<\/strong>.
