POPs
Both the list of POPs (= persistent organic pollutants) in accordance with the Stockholm Convention and the substances regulated under the corresponding EU Regulation ((EU) 2019/1021) are updated regularly.
The Stockholm Convention already included Dechlorane Plus in Annex A in May 2023. This substance is a chlorinated flame retardant and is frequently used in the electronics, automotive, construction and aviation industries.
On May 15, 2025, the European Commission adopted a delegated act to adapt the EU POP Regulation and add Dechlorane Plus. Its production and use will soon be banned with a few exceptions. However, there are transitional arrangements so that, for example, products that have already been placed on the market may continue to be used under certain conditions. The exemptions apply for a maximum of 5 years; a possible extension is to be reviewed until 2029.
Affected industries must now find alternatives and adapt their supply chains.
