PFAS
On August 20, 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published the updated proposal to restrict PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) under the REACH regulation. The revision is based on over 5,600 comments received during the 2023 public consultation and was prepared by authorities from Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.
What’s new?
The updated proposal includes assessments for eight additional sectors, such as printing and sealing applications, technical textiles, military and medical uses, and industrial applications like solvents and catalysts.
Beyond a Full Ban
In addition to a complete ban, the proposal explores alternative restriction options that allow controlled use of PFAS in areas such as electronics, energy, transport, and machinery, where risks can be managed.
What’s next?
ECHA’s scientific committees (RAC and SEAC) are currently evaluating the proposal. Their opinions will form the basis for the European Commission’s final decision, made in consultation with EU Member States.
