The IMDS
Following an update to the IMDS Regulation Wizard at the end of August, several substances from the MCCP group have been classified as SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern). These substances are listed under Group 60 of the 2025 GADSL and may contain medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCP)::
Name | CAS-No. | GADSL/SVHC |
---|---|---|
Alkane, C10-18-, Brom- Chlor- | 68955-41-9 | D |
Alkanes, C18 and >C18, chloro | 85535-86-0 | D |
Alkanes, C20-28, chloro | 2097144-43-7 | D |
Alkanes, C22-26, chloro | 108171-27-3 | D |
Alkanes, C22-30 Branched and Linear, Chloro | 1401974-24-0 | D |
Alkanes, C22-40, chloro | 106232-86-4 | D |
Alkanes, C24-28, Chloro | 1402738-52-6 | D |
Alkenes, polymd, chlorinated | 68410-99-1 | D |
Paraffin waxes and Hydrocarbon waxes, chloro | 63449-39-8 | D/P |
MCCP stands for Medium-Chain Chlorinated Paraffins. These are classified as UVCB substances (Substances of Unknown or Variable Composition, Complex Reaction Products or Biological Materials), meaning their composition is variable and often not fully known. MCCPs typically consist of at least 80% linear chloroalkanes with carbon chain lengths between C14 and C17.
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has classified MCCPs as SVHC because they meet the criteria for the following hazardous properties:
- PBT: Persistent (environmentally stable), Bioaccumulative (accumulates in organisms), and Toxic (harmful to humans and the environment)
- vPvB: Very Persistent and Very Bioaccumulative
MCCPs are often used as substitutes for short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), which are already heavily regulated. They are commonly found in applications such as flame retardants, plasticizers in PVC, lubricants, and electrical cables.
