The lowdown on the new multisourcing function in the IMDS

IMDS

When you have two or more suppliers for the same component (e.g a screw or a capacitor), do you know how to record this in the IMDS? This situation used to cause a problem, but a new solution has been incorporated in IMDS Release 13.0 called multisourcing.

Electrical and electronic (E/E) products are often made from a wide range of different components from different suppliers. Until recently, these different suppliers could not be recorded in the IMDS. However, this has recently become a requirement following the deactivation of REC019 data sheets in the latest IMDS release (click here to read more) and the resulting full declaration that must be submitted in accordance with REC001.

How does this affect you?

The changes do require more work initially, particularly because of the full declaration. This is because you now need to request proper material data sheets that meet all the requirements from all your suppliers and incorporate them into your company’s own data sheets.

But you will reap the benefits of this effort because all your MDSs will fully comply with REC001. The most important point is Rule 3.1.A.: Material data must be passed along the supply chain (tier-n –> … –> tier-1 –> automobile manufacturer). This means that the supply chain must be mapped throughout the MDS process. So, instead of generic, universal and simplified MDSs for printed circuit boards (PCBs) – in accordance with REC019 – the PCB must be assembled from the MDS for each individual part (blank circuit board, parts assembled with resistors, capacitors, connectors etc.).

But it is very important to know that multisourcing only works for parts and not for materials or semi-finished products. In addition, the different types are not permitted to vary in weight by more than 10%, otherwise an error message will be activated.
