EU Parliament wants to further reduce harmful chemicals in waste

REACH

The EU is working to achieve a toxic-free environment and a genuine circular economy in the spirit of the “Green Deal”. Back in October, the European Commission presented a proposal to further restrict persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in order to reduce waste pollution. The EU Parliament has now adopted this proposal, but is calling for significantly lower POP limits.

Strict limits have now been agreed for dicofol – a pesticide formerly used in agriculture – and pentachlorophenol, its salts and esters, which are found in treated wood and textiles.

The following demands were also formulated by the deputies:

Reduce the limits for a group of brominated flame retardants to 200 mg/kg.
Reduce the limits for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) to 20 mg/kg.
The synthetic chemical compound perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) is scheduled to be added to the list of harmful substances in June 2022.

Next, the EU Parliament will now begin negotiations with member states on the final form of the legislation.
