EU-wide new limit value for formaldehyde in indoor spaces

REACH

New indoor limits apply to formaldehyde, which has carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. For example, only 0.062 mg/m3 of formaldehyde is now permitted in indoor air for the biggest polluters, e.g. wood-based items and furniture, and for the interior of road vehicles. For all other items such as textiles, leather, plastics, building materials or electronic products, a limit of 0.08 mg/m3 applies.

However, there are transition periods to allow companies to adapt their products accordingly. For the above mentioned products it is 36 months, for vehicles even 48 months. Nevertheless, manufacturers should start early to first analyze the affected products and, in cooperation with their suppliers, switch to formaldehyde-free or low-formaldehyde products.
