The recommendations of the 2000/53/EG guideline on end-of-life vehicles and the German End-of-Life Vehicle Directive form the basis for the creation of IMDS (the International Material Data System). The automotive industry voluntarily undertook to implement this guideline. According to the ELV Directive automobiles should lend themselves to almost complete re-cycling. The ELV envisages re-cycling and re-use of at least 95% of the vehicle weight by 1st January2014. Furthermore, automobile manufacturers and their suppliers have to document in detail the materials that each car comprises of. This entails precisely entering as many as 10,000 components that are used per model. IMDS, the data bank and archiving system devised by our partner DXC Technology, assists in this task.
