Microplastics to be successively banned in the EU

REACH

Since October 15, the EU has had a ban on microplastics in cosmetics such as loose glitter, scrubs and creams with microbeads, among others. More specifically, the ban covers “all synthetic polymer particles less than five millimeters that are organic, insoluble and poorly degradable,” and it is being phased in. With a transition period of eight years, plastic granules for artificial turf fields will also be banned.

The background is that up to 42,000 tons of this microplastic, which has been added to products quite deliberately, ends up in the environment and thus also in the human body. Microplastics have potentially harmful effects on the immune system, metabolism, intestinal flora and fertility. However, tire abrasion and plastic waste, among other sources, also create microplastics.
