The International Material Data System (IMDS) was developed by the automotive industry in response to the introduction of the End-of-Life Vehicles Directive (ELV). It has now become the global industry standard for materials reporting. All automotive companies and their suppliers enter their materials data into the system. However, the IMDS has its limitations when companies need to ensure they comply with the requirements of the American Dodd-Frank Act on Conflict Minerals. The EU RoHS Directive aims to restrict substances in electrical and electronic equipment and components that are harmful to human health or the environment. Toxic and environmentally hazardous substances, such as lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE are therefore prohibited from use in products up to a low threshold.
